Councillor Stanley Colvin Cain 2014 - 2015

On his installation in May 2014 he was surrounded by his family, including some of his many grandchildren (he had 16 in all). Mr Cain also had four great-grandchildren, two daughters and two stepsons and was supported as Mayor by his wife, Sheila, who served as his mayoress.
The former councillor was enormously proud to serve as Mayor of Douglas and would often be accompanied on engagements by a grandchild or two. On taking up the office he said he had no doubt that, at times, it would be ‘gruelling’ in terms of the workload. And indeed it was. It was a year marked by the Island’s cultural celebrations for Island of Culture 2014, and welcoming guests from around the world, including North American Manx Association members, visitors from
A keen supporter of the younger generation he took the opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of responsible waste disposal by presenting Cronk y Berry School with two recycling bins for plastic bottles, prompting him to say to a packed school hall of: ‘As the adults of tomorrow it is important that you are given the right information that will allow you to make decisions and encourage the adults of today to provide the Island with a sustainable future.’
Fundraising for the mayoral charity appeal saw Stan and Sheila Cain working tirelessly for Cruse Bereavement Care, the Douglas Live at Home Scheme and St Mary’s Lourdes Youth.
At the end of his year in office Mr Cain said the year had been ‘very enjoyable’ and that he would reflect on his time as Mayor ‘with fond memories’.
On learning of Mr Cain’s death, the Leader of the Council, Councillor David Christian MBE JP paid tribute to him, saying: ‘As a councillor he was a committed representative of the people of Athol Ward to whom he gave a voice and visibility in Council. As the Mayor, with the support of Sheila as Mayoress, Stan was enormously proud to serve as the first citizen of Douglas, a role he took on with boundless enthusiasm and one I know he cherished long after he handed over his chain of office to his successor.’
