Council Leader Councillor David Christian MBE JP said: ‘This year there was an added poignancy to the occasion as 2014 marks a number of milestones, the impact of which has shaped the world in which we live today: the centenary of the start of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of D-Day, also the withdrawal of UK troops from Afghanistan.

‘As the Island’s capital, Douglas is a diverse community. Remembrance Sunday, however, unites the people of the town in paying tribute to the courageous men and women of the Armed Forces who, around the world, have given their lives so that we may live in freedom.

‘Events this year marking the outbreak of the First World War 100 years ago have done much to remind everyone of the debt owed to our service personnel. It was therefore especially encouraging to see how many young people were gathered at the War Memorial to join with us in remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.’
