Douglas Borough Council is highlighting the importance of taking out contents insurance after a number of its social housing tenants reported damage caused to their personal property following minor household fires.
Housing Committee Chairman Councillor David Ashford said: ‘The Council is responsible for buildings insurance across all its housing stock but as part of their tenancy agreement it is the tenant’s responsibility to insure their contents. This we set out in the information pack issued to new tenants, and our housing officers take every opportunity to emphasise the importance of safeguarding the family home.
‘Contents loss or damage caused by events such as fire, flood or theft can not only be distressing but also costly, so the Council would strongly advise tenants to take out home insurance that covers the full replacement value of their personal possessions.’
