Elections

Douglas Borough Council is responsible for various functions including refuse and recycling collections, housing, street lighting, parks and open spaces, public toilets, playgrounds and other leisure facilities, public events within the Borough, car parking, building control, HBN Library, the crematorium and cemetery, the Local Government Pension Scheme and enforcement of local byelaws. All these functions and services are paid for by the Borough Rate which is fixed by the Council.


To stand as a local authority member you must appear on the Register of Electors as of 1st January, 2021 – you do not have to be registered in the ward you intend to stand. To check you are registered visit gov.im/registertovote or call the Crown and Elections Unit on 685754.

Local Authority Elections will take place on Thursday, 22nd July, 2021. Douglas will have 12 vacant seats split between the four Wards, Central, East, North and South.

The term of office is just under 4 years.

Nomination forms and information packs will be available in June 2021.

Elected Members are required to attend regular Committee, Council and other meetings. All meetings take place during office hours and generally last no longer than a half day. An attendance allowance of £12,50 per hour (to a maximum of £50 per session) can be claimed, the maximum allowance payable to a member per annum is £6,000.

You can vote if you have been on the island for at 12 months, are 16 years of age or older, and are not subject to any legal incapacity to vote.
