Exiting COVID-19 lockdown: HBNL preparing to re-open

The Henry Bloom Noble Library is preparing to re-open, following the government’s latest easing of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.

While welcoming the potential resumption of what will be a limited service initially, Douglas Borough Council Leader Councillor David Christian MBE JP has expressed concern over the short notice – just one working day – the government gave local library authorities.

Councillor Christian said: ‘Throughout the COVID-19 crisis the Council has worked closely with government and been encouraged by the level of shared communication and guidance provided. We were, therefore, disappointed to learn only from the government’s daily briefing on Monday May 18 that libraries would be allowed to re-open from Wednesday May 20. This is in sharp contrast to the level of consultation and advance notice the Council enjoyed regarding the resumption of non-essential retail activity.

‘All steps necessary are being taken to undertake a full COVID-19 risk assessment of the building and facilities and then implement robust measures to safeguard the health of our library staff and customers before the library can re-open. In this, thorough preparation will be key.’
