‘Wonder Woman’ Chloe Rollitt was guest of honour at a reception hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress at Douglas town hall on Monday September 2.
Nine-year-old Chloe, a pupil at Ballacottier School, who has hemiparesis in her right side and nocturnal epilepsy, competed in a Super Hero triathlon event in Windsor, Berkshire on August 17. She completed a 150km swim in Dorney Lake in a celebrity team with Paralympic gold medallists Menna Fitzpatrick and Jennifer Kehoe, then went on to complete a 1km run to support her eight-year-old team mate Tom McIntyre, who has a prosthetic foot and ankle.
The Super Hero triathlon is the UK’s only disability sports event for the ‘everyday hero’.
The event was sponsored this year by Marvel Comics, which prompted Chloe, to compete as Wonder Woman, while her mother, Joanne, went dressed as Wonder Girl and father, Duncan, as Black Panther.
Chloe entered the triathlon to raise money for new beds for parents in the children’s ward at Noble’s Hospital and, in just five weeks, raised £12,000 which will fund 14 beds. Her mother, Joanne, said: ‘At first Chloe was going to raise money for teddies in the ward but then decided on new beds. Originally she’d hope to raise £4000 but she’s exceeded everyone’s expectations in what’s been a real family effort and a way of giving something back to the community. The support from local businesses and individuals has been amazing and now Chloe’s joined the Dream Catcher Little Star campaign.’
When asked how she’d recommend entering next year’s Super Hero triathlon Chloe, who’s never let her disabilities limit her choices, said: ‘Just try it…and see how it goes’.
