Douglas Borough Council will be joining more than 750 other local authorities across the British Isles and flying the Red Ensign on Monday September 3 to show its support for Merchant Navy seafarers.
Spearheaded by maritime charity Seafarers UK the campaign, which has been running since 2000, aims to raise public awareness of island nations’ dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers and honours the men and women who kept those nations ‘afloat’ during the First and Second World Wars.
His Worship the Mayor of Douglas, Councillor Jon Joughin JP, will be joined by fellow councillors outside Douglas town hall on Monday September 3 at 10am to preside over a short ceremony and then to raise the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day, an event to which everyone is welcome.
