A new entrance to Douglas Town Hall has been created to provide access for all.
Work to form the new ramped entrance on John Street required an existing window opening to be converted to a door with a ‘push-to-open’ mechanism and a blocked-up internal doorway to be re-opened to provide an accessible obstacle-free route to the main reception area.
Douglas Borough Council Leader Councillor David Christian MBE JP said: ‘The Town Hall is very much at the heart of the Douglas community and, as such, must be accessible for all.
Providing this new additional entrance means that wheelchair users and others with limited mobility are now able to enter and leave the town hall freely and with dignity.
‘The project to create the new entrance was not without its logistical challenges, given that the Town Hall is an historical building on the Registered Buildings list. The Council was mindful, however, that its priority was to arrive at a practical solution that would support its commitment to a fairer, more inclusive society.’
