Douglas Borough Council is to develop a 15-year strategic plan for Douglas Golf Course.
The move follows a resolution made by the Executive Committee at a meeting held on Wednesday December 21, 2016.
At a Council meeting held on Wednesday January 11, 2017 acting Executive Committee Chairman Councillor Ian Clague MBE said: ‘Douglas Golf Course is a valuable recreational space in the heart of the capital. As such, the Council deems it important that it be not only protected but also that its potential as a community asset be developed and enjoyed by a wider, non-golfing audience. Increasing the amenity value and, by extension the revenue opportunities of the site, will also help to reduce the burden on the rates.
‘In addition, the golf course has been recognised as an exceptional green space, having been awarded Green Flag status in 2014, 2015 and 2016 by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.
‘It is against this background - and the Council’s intention to engage with and be a prime stakeholder in the government’s Area Plan for the East - that the Council is to develop a 15-year strategic plan which will seek new but compatible recreational uses for Douglas Golf Course.’
