Organised by Seafarers UK the campaign aims to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the often unsung personnel of the Merchant Navy.

September 3 1939 marked not only the outbreak of the Second World War but also the first major British maritime casualty, the merchant vessel SS Athena, torpedoed just a few hours after hostilities were declared. September 3 has now become enshrined as Merchant Navy Day to honour the brave men and women who kept Britain afloat during both World Wars and those who continue to work in the Merchant Navy in peacetime.

The Red Ensign has been the recognised flag of the British Merchant Navy since 1854.
