Douglas Borough Council’s civic Sunday service drew on the values of love and leadership and supporting young people.
Held on Dunday June 12 and hosted by His Worship the Mayor Councillor John Skinner JP, the service at St George’s Church was conducted by the Ven Andrew Brown, Archdeacon of Man who took the opportunity to join with the congregation in extending good wishes to Her Majesty the Queen, Lord of Man on the occasion of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday, before welcoming His Worship, the 84th Mayor of Douglas, to the beginning of his year in office.
In his address the Mayor’s Chaplain, the Rev Canon John Coldwell, referred to the Council setting an example of leadership and charity and how His Worship, with the support of his wife, Gill, the Mayoress, would be looking to encourage young people to engage with the life of the Borough. To this end His Worship had invited Jorja Christian to perform two songs, I Don’t Know How to Love Him from Jesus Christ Superstar and The Circle of Life from The Lion King. Jorja’s performance prompted Canon Coldwell to observe: ‘If that’s an example of what youth can bring to the Borough of Douglas, let’s bring on more’ and, in closing, said that embracing love and charity had the power ‘to touch all those who live in the Borough.’
