Douglas Carnival organisers Douglas Town Centre Management is urging drag racing fans to team up and enter the ‘Bins of Glory’ wheelie bin race on Sunday July 17.
Some 20 pristine wheelie bins await teams’ wild imagination and artistic flourishes which made last year’s event one of the highlights of the carnival.
Town centre manager Oliver Cheshire said: ‘This year’s route is shorter; it’s a “sprint” from Broadway to the finishing line on Loch Promenade. Teams must be made up of three members and the 240-litre standard wheelie bins - along with the participants - can be customised to within an inch of their lives; only imagination and a sense of propriety should limit entrants’ creativity.’
As the terms and conditions set out in true (non-motorised) motorsport style, bottles of ‘something sparkling’ in descending order of palatability will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. There’s also a prize for the best dressed/dragged-up bin.
Douglas Carnival is funded by Douglas Borough Council with prizes sponsored by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company.
