Douglas Borough Council has joined with the Douglas branch of the Royal British Legion to show its appreciation of the junior Standard Bearers who support the capital’s Remembrance Sunday service and parade.
Following this year’s service held on Sunday November 8 participating junior Standard Bearers were presented with certificates at the Manx Legion Club in Market Hill, Douglas.
The occasion also provided the opportunity to make the inaugural award of the Charlie Martin and Martin Cherry Memorial Cup for the best junior Standard Bearer, which was presented to Corporal Rebecca Stokes (pictured, with trophy) of the Isle of Man Air Training Corps.
Council Leader Councillor David Christian MBE JP said: ‘On behalf of the Council I congratulate Rebecca on her achievement and commend the commitment of the junior Standard Bearers who, together with their more senior colleagues, support the Remembrance Sunday service and parade with great dignity and dedication and who execute their duties immaculately, whatever the weather. These young men and women are fitting ambassadors for the younger generation, more and more of whom, I am encouraged to see, are now attending Remembrance Sunday services to pay tribute to those who have died in conflict.’
