As part of the policy to transfer services from central to local government Douglas Borough Council will be taking on a number of car park management functions at Chester Street and Drumgold Street pay and display car parks from June 1st, 2015, previously undertaken by the Department of Infrastructure.

In the longer term it is envisaged that the Council will assume full responsibility for the car parks’ management and be able to improve the service for users. In the short term, however, matters such as maintenance and contract spaces will remain with the Department of Infrastructure. 

As part of the devolvement process and to harmonise them with the Council’s existing car parks there will be a modest increase in tariffs from June 1st and charges will apply to disabled badge holders.

Environmental services committee chairman Councillor Ritchie McNicholl said: ‘Initially users will experience only minor changes. The Council is confident that taking on these additional car parks will lead to opportunities to influence car park management policy across Douglas and capitalise on economies of scale. The measure is also government endorsement of the Council’s proven ability to operate public car parks - namely the Shaw’s Brow, Bottleneck and King George V sites - and is a practical demonstration of the advantages of vesting local authorities with the powers to deliver local services at a local level.’

With effect from June 1st the following tariffs will apply:

Drumgold Street car park (7 days a week)

• Up to 1 hour = £1.80

• Up to 2 hours = £2.40

• Up to 3 hours = £3.50

Chester Street car park (Monday to Saturday)

• Up to 1 hour = £1.80

• Up to 2 hours = £2.40

• Up to 6 hours = £3.50

• Up to 7 hours = £5.10

• Over 7 and up to 10 hours = £5.80

Parking in Chester Street car park free on Sundays, bank holidays and between the hours of 18.00 and 08.00.
