Council Leader awarded MBE

Douglas Borough Council Leader Mr Councillor David Christian JP has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

 

Copy 2  of DWCRichardButtDSC 3225 MediumCouncillor Christian, who represents Hills Ward, received the honour in recognition of his services to local government on the Island and for his work as a Justice of the Peace and senior member of the magistrates’ bench.

 

He has been a councillor for 25 years and Leader of the Council for 10 years. He is Chair of the Council’s Executive Committee, a Director of Douglas Development Partnership and a member of the Douglas Regeneration Committee.

 

Born and brought up in Douglas he is fiercely proud of the Isle of Man and passionate about the town of his birth.

 

Councillor Christian has devoted his entire adult life to public service in Douglas, having been elected to the Council at the age of 23. He became the Council’s youngest Mayor at the age of 31 in 1996, the Council’s Centenary Year, and was appointed a Justice of the Peace in November 2002.

 

The present Mayor, Councillor Mrs Carol Malarkey JP, said: 'Councillor Christian is an outstanding and extremely committed councillor, who has served his ward and the Borough of Douglas well for many years.

 

‘He is an extremely popular and well known figure among the local community, an ardent supporter of Douglas town centre regeneration and a leading ambassador for the Isle of Man nationally and internationally. The whole Council is delighted that he has received this public recognition.’
