The Henry Bloom Noble Library is participating in the ‘Gadgeteers’ Summer Reading Challenge launching Saturday 16th July 2022

Thursday, 21 July 2022 11:07

This summer children aged 4-11 can visit The Henry Bloom Noble Library on Duke Street, Douglas, to get involved in a science and innovation themed Summer Reading Challenge.

Through taking part in the Challenge, with free materials from HBN and online via the Challenge website, children will be able to join six fictional Gadgeteers. The characters use their curiosity and wonder to understand the science behind a whole range of interests from fashion and technology to cooking and music.

Through an exciting book collection and accompanying activities, the Gadgeteers will help spark children’s curiosity about the world around them. With plenty of great options across picture booksearly readers and middle grade books, there’s lots to keep children busy at HBN.

Once they are signed up to the challenge, ‘Gadgeteers’ will receive a collector poster and book bag. To complete the challenge, children must read six library books of their choice during the school summer holidays. Along the way they collect special stickers and incentives and the children who complete the challenge will be presented with a certificate and medal.

On four Saturday afternoons during the summer, the Love Tech team will be running STEM-related workshops (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) for children signed up to the challenge. There are also lots of opportunities to win fabulous prizes for the model-making competition, STEM quiz, character hunt and the best book reviews, kindly funded by events supporters Lloyds Bank and Love Tech.

Borough Librarian Jan Macartney said ‘We are thrilled that this year’s Summer Reading Challenge has a STEM theme and we are absolutely delighted that our friends at Love Tech have kindly agreed to run four workshops for us over the summer (starting on July 30), each one focussing on one of the STEM themes of science, technology, engineering and maths.

‘We’re also extremely grateful to be working once again with our event supporter Lloyds Bank who are very kindly providing a range of prizes for our various competitions’.

Quote from Regeneration and Community Committee Chair Councillor Andrew Bentley said ‘The Summer Reading Challenge is always a really exciting time for our library where Jan and her team help inspire children and young people with all kinds of imaginative and creative activities.

‘This year’s theme will further provide children with the opportunity to learn more about how science plays a part in everything they love to do - from baking to sport to music to fashion – it’s also a great and fun way to encourage children to keep up their reading during the holidays.

‘We look forward to seeing see young readers, new and old delving into the wonderful world of books and discovering new stories, characters and facts.’

Registration from the 2022 Summer Reading Challenge opens at The Henry Bloom Noble Library, Duke Street, Douglas, on Saturday July 16, at 9am.
